The classic outdoor umbrella, otherwise known as a cantilever umbrella, has become a regular addition to homes around the world. Wherever there is sunshine, you are likely to come across one of these clever inventions.

A cantilever umbrella, often seen at restaurants and coffee shops that have an outdoor seating area, looks a little like a tree bending over, much like a palm tree. The base of a cantilever umbrella can be constructed out of various types of materials such as metal or plastic, and can even be water or sand filled. The pole can also be made from these materials and some are constructed using beautiful and durable wood.

The fabric shade is often made from a high quality durable polyester fabric but can also be constructed from canvas and rattan. It’s important to know what the fabric is when choosing the umbrella because some fabrics may not be water resistant or the company may not have chosen to weather guard the fabric.

Another wonderful feature of the cantilever umbrella is that many of them offer a 360 degree rotation and some even have an easy to operate foot pedal, making them the perfect addition to your outdoor entertaining area.

When it comes down to cost, it really depends on a number of factors. What are you willing to pay? How big or small do you need the umbrella to be? Cantilever umbrellas can come in many sizes including 10 to 12 feet in width, providing a luxurious amount of shade for those scorching hot summer days. You will also need to consider what kind of base, pole and fabric materials you need; how large a space you are covering (or how small!) and if the cantilever umbrella needs to be on a table or freestanding. You may pay more for a product that meets your exact needs, but it is always worth it in the long run because you know the product is going to have a longer shelf life.

So do your research. Consider what your needs and desires, budget and style requirements are. Be practical and look at this as a long-term investment into your outdoor entertaining space. Have fun shopping!
